I was very honoured to be asked to be the President of the Wesley College Past Pupils’ Union for 2013/2014. I have thoroughly enjoyed my tenure especially representing the Union at all the other Association dinners. I particularly enjoyed The Annual Ecumenical Thanksgiving Service ‘For the Gift of Sport’ held in St Anne’s Church, at which Senator Eamonn Coghlan gave us a most wonderful and entertaining talk on what sport has meant to him.

At these events I have met other fellow Presidents representing their respective Schools and was glad to exchange views and concerns.   It appears that all Past Pupils’ Unions have one very common concern, the challenge of recruiting the younger generations to their Union and for them then to take an active part.

I welcome all new members who have joined the Union and this year’s School leavers. I hope that you will keep in touch with us through our web site where you will see all upcoming events: www.wesleyppu.com and face book. We would appreciate your views and comments.

The following are the events that have taken place during my Presidency:

1) 22/05/2013. The Golf Outing & Dinner, which was held in a new venue, Rathfarnam Golf Club, proved to be a great success. The date for this event was changed to earlier in the year and the tee times changed to later in time in the day. The changes seemed to have suited everybody. We had 30 for the golf and 10 extra for the dinner. I would like to take this opportunity to thank Andrew Stroughair for all his hard work in making this day so enjoyable.

2) 02/10/13. Our Annual Dinner was very well supported.   It was held for the second time in the Fitzwilliam Lawn Tennis Club (The old site of Epworth Hall) which brought back many memories to the ‘older’ girls. We had several Re-Unions joining us to celebrate their different Anniversaries of leaving the school. Ex-Senator and ex-Minister of Education, Mrs Mary O’Rourke was my guest speaker, who gave us an enlightening and entertaining after-dinner speech. Mrs O’Rourke was particularly pleased to talk at our event, as, not only did she open the Maths Building in Ballinteer during her time in the Department of Education, but her late brother, Brian Lenihan, then Minister of Education, opened the new Wesley College along with President Eamonn De Valera in 1969.

My thanks to Sally Syme for all her hard work in organising this dinner, thanks also to Peter Lydon and David Phillips for the wonderful video of old photographs.

4) 01/03/14. The Annual London Lunch Reunion was held in the Guoman Tower Hotel by the river Thames, a wonderful setting. Though we had a small number this year – by all accounts it was very enjoyable and all those who attended have requested the committee to keep up the tradition of this Reunion. The Committee would encourage any past pupils working in England to gather a group of their friends and join us next year. Helen Holland did a lot of work in organising this event. It was very difficult job, arranging the price and payment of same, with not knowing what the exchange rate would be of Sterling to Euro. I would like to thank Helen for all her endeavours.

5) The Annual Quiz was held in Old Wesley Rugby Club on 26th March, 2014, a really fun evening, ably organised by Deirdre and Brian Chadwick, assisted on the night by Peter Squires and Maud Fitzgerald. Thank you very much for help.

At all these events monies are collected for the Bursary Fund. All support given to this fund is very welcome. During these tough economic times, many demands are made on the Fund.

I would like to acknowledge the contributions of Alison Galbraith, Elspeth Henderson and Joan Kirk who are retiring from the Committee. Alison has done sterling work as Hon. Treasurer keeping our Accounts in order for many years. I must also thank the Members of the Committee for all their help and support to me during the year.

Finally, I am sure you will all join me in sending Niall Sisson good wishes during his forth coming year as President.

With best regards,

Melanie Lawlor (née McDowell)
